What’s New Thomas Kelly - ’The Heechees’ Inspired by the science fiction novel about the Heechee by Frederik Pohl, Thomas Kelly has chosen to explore the mysterious fluidity of glass with a series called the Heechees. According to the novel, the Heechee scattered relics of unimagined technology and worth through space...on asteroids, planets and in fabricated colonies. One might use one of Kelly’s imaginative Heechee probes to uncover evidence of the most tantalizing mystery ever encountered, that of the vanished Heechee. After sculpting the glass center probe with multiple layers of clear or colored glass, seven layers or bits are wrapped around the probe. Each wrap is multiple layers of colored glass. The probe is then heated and allowed to arch over while maintaining the wraps and not over heating them so that they also flop over. After two days of annealing, the bottom of the probe is ground so it rests flat and another Heechee is ready to grace a table with its magic and mystery.
